It’s been a minute! Teaching has kept me busy (@whitney.school.of.lutherie) which I love, but it feels good to come back to my own builds as I can.

I’ve been looking forward to the new side bender

I’ve been looking forward to the new side bender from @stewmac_guitar since first hearing whispers of its release several months ago.

Most benders on the market are iterations of an original design by luthier, Charles Fox and I started my lutherie journey with such a bender that used lightbulbs as the heat source, moved onto a silicon heating blanket and later replaced that whole system with the LMI bender, which has been great.

Always missing, though, was the cutaway press and rather than adapt what I have, I decided on this little Cadillac - a modernized version of the ‘Fox’ bender. I’m really looking forward to putting many miles on this setup!

For those who may not know, the light-box (or a window) is a great way to ensure that the mating edges of your soundboard are perfect for a precise glue-up of the book-matched plates (soundboard or backplate).

Seen here, I’m inspecting a book-matched cedar top before gluing things up. If any gaps are detected, it’s back to the hand plane and shooting board, and / or a sanding beam to dial in the joint.

Feels good to jump back on this new OM shape. Until now, I’ve always built with a traditional bolt-on M&T joint but this one features a completely bolt-on-bolt-off connection, meaning no glue under the fingerboard extension. I can’t see a reason to build any other way, moving forward.

A few other new techniques under the hood of this one, including structured sides… feeling very excited about this build!

A big tip of the hat to Zach over @treehouseguitars for sharing his bolt-on method. I learned a ton from his videos as well as from the Gore and Gilet books.

That’s a wrap! Another 5-week ‘Acoustic Guitar

That’s a wrap! Another 5-week ‘Acoustic Guitar Building Course’ comes to an end with Mike heading back home. Always tough to say goodbye but it’s a gift to be able to pass on the torch and to help light another fire in someone for this beautiful art form.

Mike concluded his course with a stunning mahogany and cedar topped OM guitar. This guitar has a beautiful bass response and mid-range with a crystal clear high end.
